"Mathematics and Me" Presentation
Client: Youth who identified high anxiety when completing mathematics assignments
My Role: Researcher, Content Organizer, Presentation Designer, and Teacher
Purpose: To help students identify the familiar feelings that arise when doing math so they effectively utilize coping tools to complete math assignments successfully.
Problem: Math anxiety and a fixed mindset are significant barriers to student success in mathematics. The "Math Emotions" presentation was designed to tackle these issues head-on by helping students recognize and manage their emotional responses to math. By introducing the concept of "math emotions©" and promoting a growth mindset, the presentation empowers students to overcome anxiety and embrace math as a skill that can be developed. Through interactive activities and practical strategies, math is transformed from a source of stress into an opportunity for growth, fostering confidence and a positive attitude toward learning.
Outcomes: The lesson not only provided students with the tools to manage their emotions but also helped them connect with math in a more positive and meaningful way, leading to greater confidence and engagement in their learning journey.
Practical
Students are provided with practical strategies to manage emotions such as boredom, frustration, or anxiety during math tasks. The presentation encourages them to connect math to their interests, set personal goals, and engage with the subject matter in meaningful ways.
Interactive
The presentation guides students through self-reflection exercises that help them better understand their emotional responses to math. This self-awareness is linked to actionable steps, empowering students to overcome challenges and view math as a "superpower" for solving problems and understanding the world.
